Here’s what Mental Metrix is, and here’s how we’re going to help you
By now, you’re familiar with Chris Spencer, our co-founder and a 10-year NFL veteran, and you know why he’s passionate about helping athletes, coaches, and sports executives. But you’re probably looking for details on what exactly Mental Metrix is and what we can do for you — yes, you.
Our goal at Mental Metrix is simple and straightforward: We want to help you build healthier and higher-performing athletes, staffs and teams.
Now, let us explain how we do it.
Over the last decade or so, there’s been a shift in the sports landscape. Everyone, from athletes to coaches to athletic directors to front office execs, has started to acknowledge how psychological and mental performance impacts individual and overall team performance.
Like Chris said, we’ve mastered the technical, tactical and physical parts of the game. Now it’s time to master the mental piece.
We understand that to maintain a competitive advantage in any arena, teams have to maximize mental performance and emphasize team dynamics; those priorities go hand-in-hand.
The razor’s edge difference in physical performance — at the 2023 NFL Combine, for example, just .1 seconds separated the fastest athlete from the tenth fastest — can only be maximized by harnessing one’s mental performance.
Part of this attitude shift is due to a new generation of athletes who recognize the impact and importance of mental skills in gaining a competitive advantage.
They want to talk about their mental metrics, especially if it will give them an edge.
So here’s how we do it: With our proprietary user portal, we create reports using open-source information to produce language-derived personality reports. Sport psychologists and other academics know there’s huge value in pen-to-paper tests; there’s research to back that up. But what those experts also know is that testing environments can skew the results of those assessments. Testing environments can create high-pressure situations for athletes because they know their score matters and, as a result, could impact their opportunities. People may deviate from their typical self in order to present in a way they think is desirable; conversely, they may feel overwhelmed, and might unintentionally present in a negative manner that is not indicative of their true self.
Personality matters — so let’s learn about it
Personality matters — to teams, to agencies, and to athletes themselves. But what we do at Mental Metrix is not a bubble test. Because we use language-derived personality reports, it is not feasible — intentionally or not — to skew the assessment results. We offer valid measures of personality, behavior, and communication and we make that data digestible. You don’t have to have a Doctorate in Psychology to understand what we’re going to deliver to you. Our proprietary measures of Player and Coach’s Attributes tell you exactly what you need to know about your team. We are qualified to take this analysis and break it down to bite-sized pieces that you can study and apply to your teams.
What we’ve created at Mental Metrix is better, more comprehensive, and more authentic.
Open-source language-derived personality reports take various public comments like press conference answers, social media posts, and other media coverage to formulate a personality report. Because we use language from across time and contexts, we get a more robust insight into personality and communication patterns. Therefore, because language-based profiles are more robust, they offer richer insight into behavior patterns, as well.
With this information, we build a matrix of sorts that helps coaches and sport leaders better understand their athletes, how to communicate and connect with them, and what motivates them. In the end, all of this knowledge results in better coach-player chemistry. It also helps with recruiting, because now your staff understands the type of individual who will fit best within your current team dynamic.
Mental Metrix isn’t just for athletes. It will help your staff, too.
There’s benefits to running this for your staff, too. When you map everyone’s traits together, it’s easy to see the gaps in your team.
Successful leaders hire people around them whose strengths balance their weaknesses.
Our Mental Metrix reports can help you identify exactly that, so you know what type of person/personality you need to build a team that fires on all cylinders.
We don’t label any personality makeup as “good” or “bad.” We don’t believe in that. There are strengths in all personality makeups. The key is understanding those makeups, utilizing strengths, minimizing vulnerabilities, and working cohesively to build the highest-performing team possible.
And the best part: Our tool is not only in demand, it’s backed by science. Millions, if not billions, of dollars are spent each year optimizing performance and supporting the well-being of athletes. Mental Metrix is the industry leader because we’ve brought together a world-class team of sport and clinical psychologists to meet the demands of athletes, coaches, and leaders, alike.
